Introduction

Norway has been on the bucket list for many years. The opportunity presented itself to do the trip with our furry babies and the decision was made; our minds made up - let’s do it!

We planned the 13,000km trip, prepared and packed our camper van “Isabel”, loaded Rafa and Gandhi, plus the mobile office, and off we went. The long journey North has begun.

We feel grateful and blessed that we get to this, and share our #vanlife adventure through Europe and Scandinavia over the next 7 weeks. Come ride along our camper road trip from Greece to Nordkapp.

Week 8 (Part 8 of 8) of camper road trip to Nordkapp

Meteora to Porto Heli, Greece

Route This Week

Total Route So Far

The time we spent at the foothills of Meteora was unforgettable. Every morning we woke up looking at the massive and impressive sandstone cliff outcrops with the monasteries clinging to the edges. A sight truly to behold.

After a few relaxing days at Meteora it was time to get back on the road again. This time we headed north from Kalabaka to the lakeside town of Kastoria in Northern Greece. As we drove further north we started seeing roadsigns warning of bears crossing with high fences on either side of the road in certain places. This is something we don’t see that often, so made quite an impression.

As there are not many campings around in this part of Greece, we ended up staying the night next to a church on the lake of Kastoria. We read on our go-to platform Park4Night that with a small donation to the church, you are welcome to spend the night. It was a beautiful setting and after a friendly and welcoming chat with the priest, and a donation in the box, we enjoyed the amazing scenery around the lake.

From Kastoria we headed south via Kozani and Larissa to Volos on the east coast of central Greece. Here we spent a few days on an incredible spot in a camping next to the ocean. We celebrated Jaco’s Birthday on 16 October with a delicious tiramisu cake I picked up from one of the local bakeries.

From here we drove further south along the east coast of Greece and spend a night in a quiet gravel parking next to the beach at Agios Konstantinos. After that we continued to Athens where we spent a couple of nights at Camping Athens.

The final almost 200km back home to Porto Heli was filled with ecstatic emotions… As we drove over the Corinth canal leaving the mainland behind and entering the Peloponnese, we could sense that we are back in familiar territory.

After 8 weeks on the road in never seen before places as far as the northernmost point of the European continent, we are finally back in the south of Greece - our trip spanning the entire continent from north to south. We made our final sightseeing stops at Solygeia and Epidaurus before arriving back home later that day feeling an overwhelming sense of bliss and gratitude for the amazing experience we will never forget.

All that remained was to reflect on every aspect of the incredible journey. In total we drove just over 14,000kms spending 231 hours on the road and couldn’t be more satisfied with our choice of the Adria Twin van conversion to call home-on-the-road. What a fantastic camper!

Highlights of the trip most certainly had to be standing under the globe monument at the North Cape in the freezing cold, and getting to experience the thrill of the northern lights (Aurora Borealis). We are so grateful to our friends Kim & Erwin for doing the Scandinavia part of the trip with us and those memories will last forever. Thank you so much!

Other highlights included the spectacular scenery of Norway in general - from the impressive fjords of which Geiranger stands out, to the beautiful Lofoten Islands. Many other memories were made along the way that we carry with us forever. Thank you for riding along and we hope to have you onboard again for the next one.
