Introduction

Norway has been on the bucket list for many years. The opportunity presented itself to do the trip with our furry babies and the decision was made; our minds made up - let’s do it!

We planned the 13,000km trip, prepared and packed our camper van “Isabel”, loaded Rafa and Gandhi, plus the mobile office, and off we went. The long journey North has begun.

We feel grateful and blessed that we get to this, and share our #vanlife adventure through Europe and Scandinavia over the next 8 weeks. Come ride along our camper road trip through Norway.

Week 6 (Part 6 of 8) of Camper Road Trip Norway

Hannover, Germany to Bordighera, Italy

Route This Week:

Total Route So Far

The week started in Campingpark Südheide a little North of Hannover with a couple of rest days. The facilities here impressed all of us so much with ablutions resembling a Spa of some sort. There was even a dishwasher to use which we have never come across anywhere on a camping. A huge big thanks to Kim for discovering this gem-glamping!

It was also here that we had to say goodbye to our travel companions and special friends Kim & Erwin with whom we planned this trip right from the start. It was, as always, an emotional goodbye; maybe even more so this time around because of what we went through, experienced and shared the last 4 weeks - an epic roadtrip of 7817kms over 26 days imprinted in our minds and memories forever and never to be forgotten. Thank you both so much for being a part of it! Truly blessed!

It was time to go our separate ways in different directions and we left with heavy hearts. Hours after we drove away I caught myself still looking in the rear view mirror every now and again to see if Erwin is still behind us like I did so many thousands of kilometres; funny how quickly we become accustomed to new habits and how it takes time to shake them off. Our friends will be missed…

We spent the night on a parking area for motorhomes in a small countryside German village a little outside of Regensburg. The next morning early we left for Waldkirchen in East Germany on the border with Austria to see the dealer we bought the van from in August. After a quick visit and some formalities we were on the road again heading to St Moritz.

As we left Germany and entered Switzerland the scenery started to change and before we knew it we found ourselves in Heidi-land. The most spectacular; and also scary mountain pass took us high into the Alps and because of the narrow, winding and very slow road, we arrived at our campsite after dark for the first time. I then realised again why we always plan to arrive in daylight…

The scenery made up for it however. The next morning only we discovered the beauty around us - towering Alpine peaks, a glazier and fir pine forests all around us. To top it all a small creek right at our doorstep which; to those that know me well; is always a bonus if not the highlight.

Jaco spent the full day in his mobile office doing the first day of month end as is the routine every 4 weeks or so. I kept myself busy with little things in and around the van and caught up with some admin and bookings for our Airbnb’s - how is it that one annoying guest can take up so much of your time that before you know it the day is almost over!? Luckily there was still time to admire the beauty of where we found ourselves amidst it all.

The next morning we packed up and spent a little time exploring St Moritz before starting the long and slow trek down the mountains in very thick fog. Over the next few villages we noticed the architecture started to change and before we even realised we were out of Switzerland and in Northern Italy.

Beautiful villages and scenery as always all the way down to Lake Como. From here onto Milan and after a quick bite from KFC, it was time to make our way to our next destination; which lay very close to our hearts - we were headed to our home in Bordighera.

We arrived late Sunday afternoon and it felt as if we never left. Everything so familiar and just so good to be back! We were looking forward to the next few days in an apartment after almost 6 weeks in the van.
