Introduction
Norway has been on the bucket list for many years. The opportunity presented itself to do the trip with our furry babies and the decision was made; our minds made up - let’s do it!
We planned the 13,000km trip, prepared and packed our camper van “Isabel”, loaded Rafa and Gandhi, plus the mobile office, and off we went. The long journey North has begun.
We feel grateful and blessed that we get to this, and share our #vanlife adventure through Europe and Scandinavia over the next 7 weeks. Come ride along our camper road trip Greece to Nordkapp.
Week 7 (Part 7 of 8) of camper road trip to Nordkapp
Bordighera, Italy to Meteora, Greece
Route This Week
Total Route So Far
It was so incredibly comfortable to have the extra space around us in our apartment in Bordighera, plus just so amazing to be back after so long, that we decided to stay an extra day.
After 5 nights of having the luxury of space around us it was time to move back into our van “Isabel”. We felt completely rested and rejuvenated and so also decided not to go back home after 7 weeks as originally planned, but rather take a look around Northern Greece as well.
It just made perfect sense seeing that our ferry arrived at Igoumenitsa just South of the Albanian border. We would be so far North and so close to Macedonia anyway, and when would we get the chance again, so a detour and an extra week came into play. Another week on the road to look forward to!
With one less day to reach our ferry from Bari in Southern Italy it meant longer distances and more hours on the road each day. We had to choose carefully where we wanted to overnight as we still wanted to return to some of the beautiful places we visited before, and not completely rush through Italy.
We decided we have to go back to San Gimignano in Tuscany. For some reason this magical place is like a magnet drawing you back. I’m not sure if it has something to do with the impressive scene where Dame Judy Dench tied herself to the towers in the movie “Tea With Mussolini”, the roles of Cher or Maggie Smith in the same movie, or just the sheer beauty of the area as we all recall from “Under The Tuscan Sun”.

We spent the night on a farm just outside Sienna. The second place we chose as a stop was Pompei at the foot of Mount Vesuvius just South of Naples; which always astonishes in some way or another - if not the crazy driving, the horribly bad roads, or the washing hanging like flags from dilapidated buildings, then it must be for the best pizza in the world - nothing like a margarita pizza in Napoli!
The next morning was an early start to reach our midday ferry. It was time to say goodbye to Italy but hopefully not for long. The ferry departure from Bari was delayed, plus bad weather at sea caused us to arrive hours late and we only got to our overnight stop in the early hours of the morning.
From Igoumenitsa we travelled inland toward Ioannina next to a beautiful lake, and ended the week at the foot of the amazing rock formations of the Byzantine monasteries of Meteora. Absolute spectacular scenery and extremely impressive buildings clawed to the edges of these massive rocky outcrops.
What was going to be the final week heading back home turned out to end quite far from home and with another highlight. So grateful!
